Im Vorfeld der Jahrestagung 2016 des Instituts für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung „Die Zukunft der Vergangenheit in der Gegenwart. Archive als Leuchtfeuer im Informationszeitalter“ werden an dieser Stelle die Abstracts zu den Vorträgen der Reihe nach zugänglich gemacht. Nachstehend das Abstract von Christoph Sonnlechner (Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchiv) zu seinem Beitrag „Parallelangebot oder Wegweiser in die Zukunft? Das weltweit umfangreichste Stadtgeschichte-Wiki und seine Interaktion mit dem Wiener Archivinformationssystem WAIS:

Die Stadt Wien betreibt unter Federführung des Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchivs seit 2014 das weltweit umfangsreichste Stadtgeschichtewiki. Dieses semantische Wiki wird vom Archiv unter anderem auch dafür eingesetzt, um Achivbenützern den Einstieg in das archiveigene Archivinformationssystem WAIS zu erleichtern. Zudem werden damit Fragestellungen für Benützer aufbereitet, welche die Archivbenützung generell erleichtern. Gegenüber dem WAIS kommt dem Wiki-Format zugute, dass Benützer an Recherchen in Informationsportalen dieser Art gewöhnt sind, da ihnen Struktur und Funktionsweise grundsätzlich vertraut sind und, dass das Wiki-Format – anders als das Archivinformationssystem – freier gestaltet werden kann. Ausgehend von diesem konkreten Anwendungsfall soll im Vortrag thematisiert werden, inwieweit Archivinformationssysteme zwar als unerlässliches Arbeitsinstrument der Archivare vielleicht ohne Alternative sind, aber als Instrumente zur Verbreitung archivischer Informationen – seien es Erschließungsinformationen oder archivierte Informationen selbst – gegenüber im WWW mehr etablierten Informationsplattformen einen schweren Stand haben. Oder liegt es nicht an der Form des Mediums, sondern an der Kommunikation mit den Archivbenützern, also kein Performance- sondern ein Kommunikationsproblem?

Archives as Lighthouses in the Information Age”, we will be making the abstracts of the presentations available one by one on this blog. Below is the abstract provided by Christoph Sonnlechner (Municipal and Provincial Archives of Vienna) for his paper “Parallel Offer or Signpost to the Future? The World’s Most Copious Urban History Wiki and its Interaction with the Vienna Archival Information System WAIS”:

The city of Vienna, through the Vienna Municipal and Provincial Archives, has been operating the world’s most copious urban history wiki since 2014. This semantic wiki is also used by the Archives to facilitate access for users to the Vienna Archival Information System (WAIS). It also addresses general questions designed to simplify the consultation of the archives for their users. In comparison with WAIS, the wiki has the advantages that users are familiar with searching in information portals of this type, that they usually already possess a basic understanding of its structure and functionality, and that – unlike WAIS – its format can be configured more freely. Starting with this specific application, the paper will discuss how archival information systems, though there is no alternative to them as an indispensable instrument for archivists, are in a difficult position when it comes to the dissemination of archival information – be it descriptive metadata or the content of archival documents themselves – compared to information platforms which are more widely established on the World Wide Web. Or perhaps it is not a question of the form of the medium, but rather one of communication with the archive users: not a performance issue at all, but a communication problem?
